First Impressions
Written by kconnect on July 16th, 2006It really is true that you usually do not have a second chance to make a first impression. The first impression you make on someone can make or break your image. Once an impression is made, how others react to you will most likely be based on that impression. If you have made a positive impression this is a good thing, if you have made a poor impression it is not.
In today’s business world there are many situations in which you might make a first impression. First impressions may be in person, online, or on the telephone. It does not matter whether the first impression you make on others is in person or not, you must still strive to leave a positive impression on everyone you meet.
When speaking to others in person, there are several things you will need to consider when making a first impression. The first thing you must do is formerly introduce yourself to the people to whom you wish to speak. Never join a conversation without properly introducing yourself.
Offer a handshake when introducing yourself. Make eye contact with those to whom you are speaking. Give a short introduction about yourself. Provide a friendly intro by telling people who you are and briefly what you do in your business. Do not try to market your business when telling people about yourself. This is not the time to slide in a marketing pitch.
When speaking to others or in a group always make confident eye contact with those to whom you are speaking. Be attentive and alert to what others are saying. You should show interest in what the speaker is saying and never act distracted or disinterested. Remember to smile when introducing yourself and speaking with others. However, your smile must be sincere. A fake or forced smile is just as bad as not smiling at all. You want others to realize that you are friendly and personable, but you want to be genuine in your actions.
