Business Networking with Confidence
Written by kconnect on July 16th, 2006As a business owner it is important to be confident. You must believe in yourself and your business. If you do not show confidence when networking, then others may not take you or your business very seriously. Some business owners are not very confident when meeting new people or speaking in front of large groups. A lot of people are a bit shy or uneasy doing so. However, in order to have a successful business you need to work to feel more confident when speaking to others.
The task of becoming confident may be simple for some and very difficult for others. There are some people who are almost confident in what they do and what say. For others it takes some effort and even practice to portray confidence. Some individuals realize they have a great business, however, they may still have trouble being able to show this confidence when meeting new people or speaking in large groups. This too can be overcome to a great extent.
There are some steps one can take to gain more confidence when trying to network for his/her business. Taking the time to write down your own talents and skills can help. Then write down the successes of your company. Think of everything that makes your company a great company to both work for and to do business with. Write down all the factors that make your business unique from others. By writing all of these things down, you will actually be able to see that you and your business both have a lot to offer other people. There is little reason not to be confident!
If you have business savvy but find that you are a little nervous when it comes to public speaking, consider taking a public speaking course at a local college or university. By taking a course in public speaking, you can practice making speeches and presentations in front of your classmates. Although you may still be nervous, this provides you with an opportunity to prepare yourself for speaking in front of groups both large and small.
During the public speaking course, you can fine-tune some of your speaking and communication skills. Listen to feedback from others so that you can learn to speak with even more confidence and ease. If you are shy when speaking in front of people, you may never feel completely confident when giving speeches or speaking to new connections. However, you can speak with more confidence through practice.
Having an idea of what you are going to say before you need to say it will also help you gain more confidence. This task is not too difficult if you are scheduled to give a speech or presentation. However, if you are simply going to be in situations where you could meet people with whom to network, knowing what to say could be a little more difficult. This is why it is important to be as prepared as possible and to anticipate what some questions and conversations may be at the event or meeting you are attending.
Before setting out to network for your business, have an idea of what it is you want to say about your business. Remember, when you first meet new people, you should not make a sales pitch. Instead, you should provide a few details about yourself and your business. And you should do so with confidence. Remember you are a talented person and you run a successful business. You have a lot to be proud of and good reason to be confident. Write up a short summary about yourself and your business. Look this summary over before functions in which you plan to do some networking. This should help you to feel a little more at east when you are talking to new people. You will not have to be worrying about figuring out exactly what to say.
When networking at events at which you are going to be a speaker, you can also be well prepared in order to gain more confidence. Of course, you will be able to write and practice your speech ahead of time. In addition, you can anticipate questions that others might ask you. Brainstorm to think of some questions and how you will answer. All these steps should help you to be a little less nervous and therefore more confident when you give your speech or presentation.
An important aspect of networking is to have confidence. You need confidence in yourself as well as in your business. Even if you are a little shy or have difficulty speaking in groups, there are steps you can take to help you present yourself with more confidence.
